Chapter Fourteen

Keith: Sunday, May 24

I can finally focus better now that I know Max is conscious. I didn’t know how long he would be out, and with head injuries, I was worried. I tend to be able to block things out, and focus on what needs to be done, and that’s what I’ve been doing. It’s what I’ve had to do. To keep everyone safe, to figure out what’s happening.

What is happening?

Deep breath. Okay. Let me think about what I know, what I don’t know, and what I need to know.

The paperwork hasn’t been helpful. I know it will be, I know Sam wouldn’t have wanted me to take it unless it would help me figure things out. Unless I took the wrong thing, maybe I read his code wrong. Sam was smart, I don’t know why he didn’t come to me with this and let me help him. What did he get himself into that he couldn’t trust me with it?

I shift my focus back to the task at hand, gathering and processing data. So, we know that the virus impacts people in a manner that makes them batshit crazy. Mean as hell. Vicious. But why? The report said bio-weapon and mind-control.

The virus was spread via our water supply. That was documented in the paperwork. Whoever they are, found a way to bypass the filtration system, so all public water sources nearby that were accessible were contaminated. I wonder if the mind-control actually worked, or if all that resulted were side-effects? A bad reaction?

The report also stated flu-like symptoms, which explains the epidemic that has been going around. Is that also a side-effect, or a precursor to whatever was next? Does everyone get the flu symptoms?

So much of the report is redacted, and I desperately wish I could just see the whole thing. There was a mention of this organism not to be used with other things, is that possibly where things went wrong?

There’s a list I haven’t figured out yet. Cities…with no other information. Columbus, Houston, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Denver, Minneapolis, St. Louis, New Orleans, Tampa, and Washington. Is this their bases? Their suppliers? Their targets?

I feel like all I do is spin my wheels. I need to figure one solid thing out.

I need a blood sample.

Sigh.

I get up and walk over to the window. I’ve done this at least a dozen times, just peeping outside at whatever might be out there. I study the surroundings cautiously, as to not open the blinds covering the window too much, giving away our hiding place.

I’ve seen them, the angry people. The first time I looked outside was because I heard a loud noise and couldn’t place it. I lightly fingered the blinds just enough to see outside and saw a man, nearly six-foot, close to my height, pounding his fists against a mailbox. It was so strange, to see someone behave in this manner, to watch from a distance far enough away to be safe, but close enough to see his inhumane motions.
